As a husband and father, Dave knows that your portrait is much more than just capturing a special moment, it has to capture the very essence of each individual. His outgoing nature and love of his craft enables him to bond with his clients to create exquisite images of children and families. He has that special knack of putting people at ease and allowing their unique personalities to shine. Dave creates masterpieces that will be passed down from generation to generation, a moment captured in time for you, your children, and their children to cherish. Dave Cruz is one of Arizona’s premier photojournalist portrait artists. His background as an award wining photojournalist has been instrumental in developing his talents and style for capturing the emotions that make his images reach out and touch your heart. Dave began his career in Texas working for several local newspapers, including the Port Arthur News where he rose to photo editor while earning his Bachelors degree in mass communications. In 1991 Dave relocated to Arizona where he began taking on editorial freelance assignments for national and international publications while serving as a staff photographer at the East Valley Tribune, later joining the Arizona Republic. He quickly gained a reputation for the insightful photographs of subjects as varied as the birth of quintuplets, international medical missions in Africa and South America, to the war in Iraq. Every year from 1991-1996 Cox Arizona Publications named him “Photographer of the Year” and throughout the 1990’s he earned a wall full of awards for photography of general news, sports news, sports action and photojournalism from the Associated Press Club and the Arizona Press Club and Suburban Newspapers of America. Time passed and Dave married and became a father. Recognizing the importance of preserving the memories of his family’s life moments and having a passion to capture these moments for others in his community, Dave decided it was time to transition from the field of photojournalism into something more personal. Today Dave specializes in Family Portraits, Weddings, Corporate and Editorial photography. “The type of photography that I do today is not likely to be seen by thousands of people, which was the case when I photographed the news,” he says. “But their meaning…their importance in the lives of families is far more enduring. They become family treasures, not sheets of newspaper that are casually discarded.” There is a difference in how Dave Cruz views the images that he creates for his clients today, one that he is passionate about. “To me personally, it is the difference between covering a community and becoming part of it. I want people to turn to me as their lifetime family photographer; someone who truly knows them and the special relationships they have with their family members and friends. I want them to know that the most important thing to me, next to my family, is helping them identify and capture those precious moments that they will treasure forever. For me it is more than just taking a picture, every time I push the button on my camera it is because I feel I am truly creating Images That Matter.”
